"Seems fair," he smiles, because yeah, it does. But for now he's just happy to get to know this guy more. He considers what he coudl have in his calzone as he thinks.
"So, I don't really know anything about you, York. Do you have family?"
"I do. Don't see my parents so much since I moved out, but I go see them now and then. Got a group of friends who I consider my second family. Bunch of dorks, and I love 'em." His smile is wide and fond.
"Whoa, are you serious? There's ten of you?!" His eyes are wide, but then he laughs. "Yeah, you know what, I believe you." Crazy as it sounds, but hey.
He grins slightly. "Believe it or not, I actually have. Not for very long though, and he was less a surrogate dad to siblings and more the group dad. That's some dedication on your part though."
"If it helps, there are two sets of twins. My oldest and youngest siblings both come as a pair. And are the source of my only sisters."
Still, he raises an intrigued eyebrow at York's comment. Thing is, he's even met North once, so he would be amused to know that there was that connection shared between them. Their circles overlap, and they don't even know it. He shrugs off the 'dedication' part.
"I'm the fourth oldest. My oldest brother isn't very... responsible. His twin sister isn't all that nurturing but she spends a lot of time working to help support us. That leaves the third oldest and he works harder than he'd ever want to admit to help us. But he works three part time jobs, so I'm mostly responsible for everyone younger than us. Luckily some are college aged so... Gamma doesn't need as much herding around at his age anymore, but Theta and the twins are a lot of work."
"Quite the age spread you got there. Though I guess with so many kids, that's inevitable. Third oldest sounds like a good egg." He rubs his chin, curious. "Got a bit of a Greek letter naming system going on there. Is that nicknames or...?"
If only Tex was more liberal with discussing her family, or... ever mentioned them at all, he might have recognised the pattern. But York's only ever known her as Texas or Allison, leaving the overlapping connections unknown.
"I'm surprised you had time for a date. ...Although now I think about it, I think you mentioned a sibling being the one to basically push you out of the house for it."
“Nicknames. Which our father used religiously. I was born Daniel. Grew so used to Delta that upon legal majority I changed it.”
Which not all of them had. But Delta likes what it said about him.
“Yeah, Omega. Third oldest. My oldest sister even agrees to come over and help babysit, which is rare. I love her, but she isn’t good with kids. Instead she helps pay for things. Works with some Freelance security group or other.”
"Power to you," he says with a smile. "I've been York a good long while, but not from childhood. Still quite like my real name even if few people beyond my parents still use it but hey."
That gets a head tilt as puzzle pieces he hadn't been aware of suddenly become visible in his head. Sure, there are other security groups around but a freelance group is less common. "...That wouldn't be the Freelancers would it?"
“That’s it,” Delta answers, sitting up and smiling as he did so. Interesting. “You’ve heard of them? I haven’t met her coworkers of course, well, Matt. My little brother Theta, and I, we’re partially deaf. Matt knows how to sign so my sister sometimes brings him by to help watch. Makes Theta feel more like he really can do anything.”
To reinforce the partially deaf, Delta brushes his hair back from his ear just enough to show off a small, very subtle hearing aid. Technology these days is impressive, makes it a lot easier for him to blend in.
Matt. Maine. Now he thinks, he does remember a kid signing with Maine one time. York had been quite busy that day, but he'd seen Wash with him and a skateboard later and watched them for a bit.
But Delta's sister works with them. He immediately rules the very only-child Carolina out. Connie is secretive but once while drunk she'd hinted at a rather non-existent family. Which leaves...
"Thank you for confirming what I had feared." It's not quite a squeak but it's certainly higher than normal. "...Omega can't be scarier than Tex. I choose him."
"...I would very much appreciate it if you're willing and won't get in trouble." He rubs the back of his neck. "I have a lot of respect for your sister and a healthy dose of fear."
“Fear is probably a good choice,” Delta agrees. Then, after a moment of thought he nods to himself.
“Here is what I’ll do. I will tell Omega about the wonderful man who saved me from a no doubt terrible blind date. Who took me to pizza and was charming and lovely. And how excited I am to hear back from him about his schedule, so he can take me out again.”
It’s a very round about and slightly sly way of asking if maybe, in spite of his family, they could have another date. Because, frankly, he would like one. York has been a charming gentleman and made him smile more than he would have thought possible. Pursuing this more might be good. He hopes York agrees and isn’t overwhelmed by his siblings.
York's eyes widen with hope and relief. "You'd do that? I... yes, that would be great." And also sounds like Delta has still enjoyed the evening despite the apparent plot twist.
In his relief at the thought of maybe actually being allowed to live, though he's not sure he'll be able to meet Tex's eye for the next week, it takes him a moment to catch the subtleties of Delta's words.
"You want a second date? ...Even knowing whatever Tex has told you about me?" He dreads to imagine. And yet... he would like to see Delta again.
"You fuck up a notoriously difficult lock and suddenly everyone's a critic..." It's an old story between the group, but one he's never managed to live down.
A second date though. He smiles. "I'd like that, and would gladly walk you home." He considers. "With reassurance that if I get spotted, you'll defend me. I'd like to be in one piece for that second date."
He can't help but grin. "You have an interesting way of asking for things." But nonetheless, he reaches his own hand and takes Delta's hand, a solid grip, but gentle.
Of course he has an interesting way. York's met his sister, right? You learned round about ways of asking for what you wanted with people like Beta running the family. He does, though, smile at the warmth of their hands tangled together.
Too true. He smiles down at their joined hands and takes a moment to appreciate that, fear of Delta's family aside, this night is turning out way better than he'd hoped.

"How about you? You mentioned a brother?"

Funny thing, Delta doesn't even know there is overlap in their circle. One of York's 'friends' who was Delta's elder sister.
"Many of them are still young. I'm the fourth oldest, and one of the two primary guardians. Ever date someone who is more or less a father?"

He grins slightly. "Believe it or not, I actually have. Not for very long though, and he was less a surrogate dad to siblings and more the group dad. That's some dedication on your part though."

"Tex. You're Allison's brother." Oh god...

“Beta,” Delta corrects without thinking. But that means he definitely knows more than just of them. And then his eyes go wide.
“You’re that York? Oh fuck. B is going to throttle you and Omega. Not sure which order.”

"Thank you for confirming what I had feared." It's not quite a squeak but it's certainly higher than normal. "...Omega can't be scarier than Tex. I choose him."

“She says you’re an awful lockpick,” Delta shrugs. But he does nod. Yes. Yes he would like a second date.
“Provided I get to count this as a first, and you might consider walking me home, a second would be nice.”

"I'll take that. Maine I can outrun so long as he doesn't catch me and I would hope my manner is decent, especially considering this is a date."
