We can't handle a pet right now. Perhaps a hamster, but you can't play with those quite as well.

I'd really rather not be responsible for feeding and sheltering something that can't tell me when it's sick. Also hamsters eat their own babies if someone sees them.

I met him on accident. I don't think he'll come after me. I'm going to get a carry permit.
